Cotton

  • Cotton will shrink if itโ€™s washed at a high temperature. It can be ironed at a high temperature.

  • If the garment is coloured, it should be washed alone the first time because of the dyes.

  • Gently give your garments a little stretch to get them back into shape. Try to air dry clothes flat and out of the sun.

  • Colours will fade if the garment is hung in direct sunlight.

Viscose & Rayon

  • Best practice is to hand wash in cold water to prevent damage to the fabric.

  • If you must machine-wash a rayon item, turn it inside out and put it in a mesh washing bag. Wash it in cold water on the delicate cycle with a low spin cycle.

  • Do no tumble-dry as it can destroy the fabric.

  • Treat rayon gently when handling because aggressive agitation breaks fibers and causes the fabric to pill or take on a fuzzy appearance.

Linen

  • Linen will shrink if itโ€™s washed at a high temperature. It can be ironed at a high temperature.

  • If the garment is coloured, it should be washed alone the first time because of the dyes.

  • Colours will fade if the garment is hung in direct sunlight.

  • Linen naturally gets softer with every wash, do not use fabric softeners as they weaken the fibers.

Wool

  • Hand wash inside out in warm (not hot) water using a registered liquid wool wash. Wash in a large tub with plenty of water (not a bucket). This will help prevent the garment from becoming matted. Handle carefully when wet.ย

  • Dry flat immediately out of direct sunlight. Iron (if necessary) using a warm steam setting.

  • Store folded.

  • If the garment care label advises machine washing, use a warm delicate/wool cycle in a delicates bag. Slow spin and remove from the machine immediately.

  • Wool is naturally wrinkle resistant. Suiting, trousers, etc. should be hung straight after use so any creases will drop out.

  • Perspiration can harm and discolour wool fibres, so it might be good to wear a camisole or singlet underneath more delicate wool garments.

Polyester & Nylon

  • Cold wash. These fabrics are sensitive to heat!

ย

  • Iron at a low temperature with no steam.

ย

  • Has high resistance to fading and is durable and strong.

Elastine, Spandex & Lycra

  • Fibers like elastane, spandex, and Lycra give clothes their stretch and then return to their original state.

  • To maintain elasticity over time, always wash with cold water.

  • Washing items in a mesh garment bag will help prevent your pieces from twisting and over-stretching.

  • Wash any tight-fitting spandex garments after every use with mild detergent.

  • Air-dry. Hot temperatures in tumble dryers can damage the elastic fibers.

Denim

  • Machine wash inside out to retain colour, separately, and in cold water.

  • Pre-dissolve washing powder or liquid in water to avoid detergent staining.

  • Remove from the machine immediately, shaking out any folds or wrinkles. This prevents dye โ€œpondingโ€ which leaves creases and folds that are white in appearance.

  • Line dry inside out. If the care instructions advise tumble drying, then dry on a low heat setting. Warm to hot iron using plenty of steam.

  • Wash before any visits to the tailor, as denim can shrink (even if โ€˜pre-shrunkโ€™).

  • Wash denim sparingly to maintain the garment and reduce environmental impact.

Silk

  • Hand wash silk garments inside out in warm (not hot) water using a delicate liquid detergent. Some silks may handle a gentle machine wash โ€“ check the manufacturerโ€™s care instructions. Handle with care when wet.

  • Dry flat out of direct sunlight. Iron on a low heat setting with steam.

  • Moths love silk โ€“ ideally, store your silk garments in plastic along with some sort of moth repellent.

  • Silk can be easily damaged by perspiration, so wear a camisole or singlet underneath shirts/tops.

Delicate fabrics

  • Fine polyester chiffons or nylon mesh knits must be handled with extra care.

  • Garments will snag if they come into contact with rough surfaces such as jewellery, handbags, or seatbelts.

  • When laundering, follow the individual garmentโ€™s care instructions.

  • When handwashing, swirl your clothes gently in circles, side-to-side and up and down. Do not wring.
