The Saddleback Tieke Feather Earrings from Remix Plastics are the latest of their recycled plastic native bird earrings. The Tฤซeke is one of the most recognisable bird species in New Zealand due to its bold plumage markings, loud vocalisations, and distinctive orange-red wattles. Saddlebacks are in the endemic New Zealand โwattlebirdโ family (Callaeidae), along with kokako and the extinct huia. These dual-feather earrings are made from gold and black ice cream container lids and drape over one another like the tail feathers of the Saddleback. Please read more about Remix and the great work they are doing below:
The work Remix are doing were brought to attention when the Huia Feather Earrings were worn by Jacinda Ardern in 2020. “Our recycled plastic products are a vehicle to empower people to make sustainable changes, whether big or small. With local waste, we create products that have a sustainable story – this not only diverts waste from landfills, but also provides a way to engage people in a conversation around reducing single-use plastic. We are proud that our products are created in collaboration and with support from organisations such as the Christchurch City Libraries and specifically Tลซranga.”
